I tried to use Skype on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, but microphone and webcam didn't work properly with Skype. I know I need to get some configuration stuff done, so I did a bit of research and found this link that exactly tackled my issue:

So the idea is that you need to make sure your microphone is working, and most importantly, the one working is used and recognized by Ubuntu. Other than this, you might need to do some configuration to Pulse Audio.
As for video displaying, you need to make sure your webcam is UVC compatible; if that is the case, then your webcam should be good to plug-and-play.
