Saying goodbye to everything I have ever lived with, everyone I love, every unforgettable memory... Goodbye Taiwan.
Boarding on this no-particular plane, I first arrived at Hong Kong international airport. If that I was a true tourist, I would have been extremely excited about visiting this airport. It is the best airport I have ever visited. However I did not feel any bit of excitement; I felt calm... and lonely?!
Anyway, after sticking around the airport plus sending emails to Flora and my parents, I went straight to the boarding gate to my transfer flight.
This plane is going to take me to the United States, a place I have never been to since 20 years ago. I am going to the greatest city - New York. So you can say that this plane is super special to me - a once-in-a-life-time plane.
Of course, this is a long flight (I hate long flight), a direct flight from Hong Kong to New York. Again, no excitement, no neverousness. Just me, myself and my carry-on baggage.
On the plane, I wished I could fall asleep all the time so that I wouldn't think about HOME. But the truth is: I kept awakening most of the time and felt bored. I started talking to a young lady sitting right next to me; I first asked her about how to fill in certain parts of custom record form. Then we soon found we had much to talk about. She is a Chinese and works in Hong Kong. She boared on this flight to visit some friends in New York.
Her background actually is quite impressive. She finished her under at Beijing 清華 university. And then after one year of master in USC, she found herself a job in AMD, where she worked on IC design. After 3 years of industrial experience, she learned what she needed and then went back to school again - Columbia MBA. YES, COLUMBIA.
Two years of MBA consumed her lots of money, but she quickly even that expense with a rewarding high-paid job in Hong Kong, where she does business acquisition.
Impressive resume huh?
Below I adopted some conersations between us.
(Me) Among those cities you've ever been to or lived in, which one is your favourite?
Ans: No favorite one. I am a indifferent person. I can live in any city, because you know you can live well as long as you know where to have fun and how to keep your live going.
(SHE)How much is it to buy a house in New Zealand? The top universities in Taiwan? How much is your salaries? your tuition fees?
After talking to her, I think I've learned something along the way.
First, we must notice that this kind of person is what we will face and compete with. And as you can see she can live anywhere as long as there has an opportunity for her.
Second, all her questions about me are mostly about "numbers". Strange huh? Not really. So you can know that Chinese people are 'counting on every bit of you'. She knows you, she counts numbers, she gets vital information from you. And how should you deal with her? Counting every bit of her back?
Third, from her stand point it is clear that chances for young people around the globe are in China now. But are you ready to compete with savage Chinese as well as international talented minds?
Taiwanese youngsters must know that this kind of person is what they will face tomorrow.
Well, one thing nice about this young lady is that she said to me: "If I can make it, you cane make it too." So be prepared and focused about what you want, Henry!!!
